Shipyard

Buying an older second hand boat is a lot more budget friendly than acquiring one fresh of the wharf. At first. A lot of work and money goes into bringing her up to ship-shape condition.

  The Obi-Wan previously served as a family boat on sheltered waters: the Grevelingenmeer in the south of Holland. As such, she wasn't very well equiped for life on the open sea.

But that was what I was looking for. Most of the time, accessories just drive up the price. Say the owner installed a GPS 5 years ago. It would have cost him four times the current price for a product with half the features and capabilities of a current model. But the owner will calculate the price in the total package. So I definitely was looking for a boat with the absolute minimum of bells and whistles.

On average, the annual running costs of a yacht, including berths, insurance and maintenance, go at about 10 to 15% of the original purchasing price. Because of the fact that the Obi-Wan needed a decent workover, the first year, I got up to about 20%

  

Aside from the financial aspect, it takes a lot of time and work to get her up to speed.
